Understanding NDIS housing supports can feel overwhelming, especially when faced with terms like SIL, SDA, and ILO. Each option offers a different level of support and flexibility, and choosing the right one is essential for long-term independence and wellbeing.
At Mindful Beings Occupational Therapy on the Gold Coast, we help individuals and families navigate these options with clarity and confidence.
Supported Independent Living (SIL) provides assistance with daily tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and personal care. It is often delivered in shared living environments and is ideal for individuals who require regular support but still want to develop independence.
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is designed for individuals with high support needs. These homes are purpose-built with features such as wheelchair accessibility, reinforced structures, and integrated assistive technology to support safety and functionality.
Individualised Living Options (ILO) offer a more flexible and personalised approach. This may include living with a host family, co-residency arrangements, or tailored supports in a private home.
Additionally, a small proportion of NDIS participants—currently around 6% as of May 2026, may be eligible for adaptive living arrangements such as Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). SDA is designed for individuals with high support needs who require purpose-built housing, including features like wheelchair accessibility, reinforced construction, and integrated assistive technology to ensure safety and functionality.
To be eligible, participants must meet specific criteria under one of the SDA design categories: Improved Liveability, Robust, Fully Accessible, or High Physical Support. They must also demonstrate that other housing options, including mainstream or non-NDIS housing, have been explored and are not suitable for their needs.
Your OT will support you in understanding and assessing your needs alongside advocating for you to the NDIS. Choosing between these options depends on a person’s functional capacity, goals, and support requirements. This is where Mindful Beings Occupational Therapy plays a critical role.
We conduct comprehensive ( SIL, SDA, ILO assessments) to evaluate daily living skills, mobility, cognitive function, and environmental needs. These assessments form the foundation for detailed reports that support NDIS funding applications.
Our team works closely with clients on the Gold Coast to identify the most suitable living arrangement, ensuring it aligns with their lifestyle and long-term goals.
We also support skill development, helping individuals build independence in areas such as personal care, household tasks, and community participation.
Navigating NDIS housing and Formal Supports such as SIL providers doesn’t have to be confusing. With the guidance of Mindful Beings Occupational Therapy, individuals and families can make informed decisions that lead to greater independence and improved quality of life.
