Developmental Milestones: Is Your Child on Track? 🌱
Every child grows, learns and develops at their own pace! But as parents and carers, it can sometimes be tricky to know what skills your little one should be developing and when.
That's where developmental milestones come in!
What Are Developmental Milestones?
Developmental milestones are skills children typically develop as they grow, from learning to talk and play with others to becoming more independent with everyday tasks.
Between the ages of 2 and 5 years, children experience significant development across four key areas:
🧡 Social and Emotional Skills: Learning to interact with others, express emotions, take turns and develop friendships.
💬 Language and Communication: Developing vocabulary, following instructions, asking questions and engaging in conversations.
🏃 Movement and Self-Care: Building coordination, balance and independence with activities such as dressing, eating and using the toilet.
🧩 Thinking and Learning: Developing problem-solving skills, imagination, attention and early learning abilities.
What Should My Child Be Doing at Each Age?
Here are just a few examples of developmental milestones:
By 2 years: Running, kicking a ball, using two-word phrases and eating with a spoon.
By 3 years: Asking questions, engaging with other children, using a fork and putting on some clothing independently.
By 4 years: Engaging in pretend play, catching a large ball, holding a pencil with their fingers and becoming more independent with toileting.
By 5 years: Taking turns in games, hopping on one foot, managing some buttons and writing some letters in their name.
Remember, these are just examples! Every child has their own developmental journey.
How Can You Support Your Child's Development?
The good news? Play is one of the best ways children learn!
Everyday activities such as building blocks, playing at the park, reading books, singing songs and practising daily routines provide valuable opportunities to develop new skills.
You don't always need fancy toys or structured activities. Sometimes, the simplest moments create the biggest learning opportunities!
When Should You Seek Support?
While children develop at different rates, it's important to recognise when they may benefit from some extra support.
If your child is finding certain milestones challenging, has lost previously developed skills or you're concerned about their development, speaking with your GP or child health nurse is a great place to start.
Early identification and support can make a meaningful difference!
How Can Occupational Therapy Help?

Whether that's improving fine motor skills, building independence with dressing and toileting, supporting emotional regulation or developing play and social skills, our goal is to help children build confidence and independence through meaningful, play-based therapy.
